Snowy Sheathbill, Preening

from $35.00

Painted while I was living in the Antarctic.  These are strange little birds, snowy white and about the size of a chicken, who live in burrows on the Antarctic peninsula.  They eat everything disgusting that you can imagine- their niche is to eat anything that would normally rot, and they are also enthusiastic thieves.  That being said, they're charming.  They make a distinctive sound that sailors described as "Mutt, Mutt" and they are utterly fearless around humans, stealing your pen and exploring your bag for any goodies they can scurry away with.  They spend a lot of time bathing, which is a good thing in a snow-white little bird that eats a lot of poo.
